 Tailored shirts with button-down collar

The history of the button-down collar

The button-down collar has its origins in England, more specifically in the sport of polo. After long sleeve shirts were no longer desired in the 1870s in men sports,
the players put the emphasis more on convenience and
teams began to wear shirts with short sleeves.

Until the early 1920s the collar legs on the shirts of polo
athletes were very long. This turned out to be a real
problem, especially when ridigin on horse at a gallop!
Through the wind collars regularly hit the players
in the face and disguised their view.

The button-down develops

The first idea of the Englishman was to sew the collar tips of the shirt. However, later it turned out that the collar seams dissolved during washing and the shirt broke. Next, they tried to fix the collar points with a metal pressure cap to the shirt. Since there still was no stainless material, this solution was also rejected rather quickly. The third solution we all know as it still holds to this day: The collar points were fixed with an ordinary shirt button. This was the birth of the button-down collar.

From Europe to America

From Europe, the idea about the button-down collar spread to America. It is said that the owner of the famous New York fashion business Brooks Brothers traveled to England to buy fabrics. The brothers discovered the new idea of collar attachment and were immediately thrilled. They took it to America and established this collar type on the American market. Even today, the button-down collar is still a very popular collar type that is often worn during leisure time in the United States. But the history of the collar goes away with the myth that the buttons are attached to better fit in combination with a tie.

Fine Cotton Company provides the collar in two different collar stand heights. The simple button-down is good for anyone, while the higher button-down (double button) is ideal for larger men with a slightly longer neck.
